Preparing your Skin for the Vata Season (Fall to Winter)

Preparing your Skin for the Vata Season (Fall to Winter)

Did you know that the seasons, like our body's doshas, follow the same cycles?

Ayurveda found that while the flow of seasons and their qualities differ each year, they remain in accordance to a certain rhythm. Understanding this cycle helps us understand the effect on our body and mind when we eat different foods, sleep patterns, and even our moods. This article aims to outline a few tips for balancing vata during the fall season!

The fall, otherwise known as Vata season, is a time of transition. Many trees and shrubs are quietly undressing in preparation for the winter with brilliant orange, reds, and yellows. There is a subtle browning of the earth. Temperatures, which, just a few weeks ago were raging with the intense heat of summer, are beginning to hint at the telltale crispness of autumn.

Prepping for Vata Skincare

In order to be fully prepared for the upcoming Vata season, it's important to understand its characteristics and how they affect our skin. Life is as much about elements of nature as it is about discovering unique ways to integrate its benefits into our health and beauty regime.

With the approach of the Vata season, dryness and roughness of the skin is often evident. However, there's a misconception about this popular, yet highly-anticipated season in terms of what makes it so difficult to battle with.

Take the dosha quiz first before you start designing your Vata Skincare to see which will work best for your skin and holistic wellness as a whole.

How to know it’s the Vata season?

Vata season refers to the period between late autumn and early spring since it shares some of the characteristics of Vata (such as being chilly, dry, bright, clear, and mobile) with its defining characteristics.

The indications of the beginning of the Vata season include:

  • Dry, harsh, frigid, swift, and light describe the air.
  • Similar frigid conditions prevail; the earth element begins to dry up and becomes harder and harsher.
  • These characteristics also appear in our body and thinking.
  • Intestinal issues, aches and pains in the joints and muscles, exhaustion, the typical cold and flu, and allergies are all on the rise.
  • Immunity is decreased.
  • You often exhibit increased agitation.

Vata, or air, represents the ethereal energy of our being. Vata regulates the movement of air in and out of our lungs, and affects the flow of water in our bodies. Therefore, when Vata is imbalanced or aggravated, it could lead to several skin problems like dryness, roughness, cracking.

Skincare Rituals during the Vata Season

  1. Garshana or dry brushing is an important part of an Ayurvedic routine or “dinacharya”. Do not forget to start your ‘Snana’ or bathing routine by dry brushing first. It’s ideal to dry brush just before taking a shower, so you may wash off any flaky skin and dead skin cells.
  2. Step into a warm, relaxing shower and begin by cleansing your body. An ideal pick for this season is the Vata Calming Facial Oil and Body Massage Oil. Owing to its rich and creamy consistency, it deeply nurtures, cleanses and brightens your skin leaving a mild lingering fresh texture throughout the day.
    1. It is beneficial to rehydrate your skin with oil after dry brushing and showering. When the skin is still moist, oils penetrate to the skin's lowest layer easier, giving it enhanced suppleness and locks in moisture.
  3. Tongue scraping once in the morning and at night after brushing is recommended especially when one is trying to leading a holistic diet. It not only refreshes the tongue but also removes toxins accumulated in its surface which leads to diseases if left neglected and greatly affects our digestive fire or Agni. In turn, this also leaves a negative impact on our skin.

  4. Abhyanga lovers can try the exquisite Kansa wand facial and body massage with the Ayurvedic oils. These oils are enriched with fresh, deeply scented Ayurvedic ingredients that lend intense moisture to the skin. Winter is the best time of year to nourish the skin, because it is dryer and more receptive during this cold season.

  5. A crucial and an often missed step to add to your is an Anti-aging Cream. Strengthen underlying connective tissues, resulting in increased elasticity and a more youthful appearance. Its hydrating essesnce makes a great choice to combat early or premature signs of aging -  as it imparts unrivalled smoothness and a dazzling radiance to your skin.

  6. At night, another facial massage will step up your skincare and wellness routine in the Vata season, especially if you’re a sufferer of insomnia. Kansa Organics’s Beauty Duo is a perfect tool for facial rejuvenation and lymphatic drainage massage.

Due to the critical nature of vata in our body and its effect on the skin, one should be aware of the foods you are eating, lifestyle habits and how they affect the balance. The right ayurvedic routine could make a huge difference in your health and well being.

It is essential to make sure that Vata dosha, or the air element, remains in harmony. With these simple Ayurvedic tips and routine remedies, you can take a proactive step towards keeping your skin healthy.
